A tech entrepreneur’s renovated historic Paris apartment

In the royal heart of Right Bank Paris, where imperious buildings betray the first arrondissement’s history of housing courtesans and kings, Émilie Briand and Guillaume Multrier found their fantasy home. It’s secreted inside one of the city’s oldest hôtel particuliers, in a coveted village pocket, on the site of the ancient Porte Montmartre — a gate once punching into a five-kilometre stretch of fortress wall built by King Philippe Auguste (1165–1223) to protect Paris from Anglo-Norman invasion. The property came to them through Antonia Rivoire Immobilier, an agent whose unique collection and clientele are captured on the company’s website with a quote from French philosopher Gaston Bachelard: “The home, more than the landscape, is the domain of the soul.”

Former WWII bunker becomes a cosy, concrete urban hideaway

Since their chance meeting in a New York elevator in 1992, photographer Mark Seelen and his wife, graphic designer Janine, have come a long way. They moved back to Janine’s childhood home of Hamburg 20 years ago, turning a spacious 1960s bungalow in the suburbs into a happy family home. But, with their two children, Max and Marie, now graduated from university and away travelling the world, the couple decided it was time for another change. Nobody expected it to come in the form of a converted WWII bunker.

Architect John Wardle renovates his own house in Australia

The founder of John Wardle Architects has remodelled Kew Residence, his Melbourne home of 25 years, using Victorian ash and handmade glazed tiles from Japan. John Wardle and his wife Susan have owned the two-storey house, which has been shortlisted for Dezeen Awards 2020 house interior of the year, for a quarter of a century and renovated it multiple times.
