Since their chance meeting in a New York elevator in 1992, photographer Mark Seelen and his wife, graphic designer Janine, have come a long way. They moved back to Janine’s childhood home of Hamburg 20 years ago, turning a spacious 1960s bungalow in the suburbs into a happy family home. But, with their two children, Max and Marie, now graduated from university and away travelling the world, the couple decided it was time for another change. Nobody expected it to come in the form of a converted WWII bunker.

A tactile material palette and floor-to-ceiling glazing characterise this Ecuadorian house, which Jannina Cabal has created for a family of five in the town of Samborondón. The dwelling was designed by Cabal to be as simple as possible and form a part of its verdant setting, which is bordered by a park and a lake in the suburbs of Guayaquil.

The founder of John Wardle Architects has remodelled Kew Residence, his Melbourne home of 25 years, using Victorian ash and handmade glazed tiles from Japan. John Wardle and his wife Susan have owned the two-storey house, which has been shortlisted for Dezeen Awards 2020 house interior of the year, for a quarter of a century and renovated it multiple times.

Formerly a logging town, Truckee, near Lake Tahoe in California, has now been developed into a popular mountain retreat. This is the location for a project undertaken by the local practice, Faulkner Architects, entitled Lookout. The specification is for a spacious family property to be enjoyed throughout the year.

Located in Taiwan, Residence C ( Yonghe Chen House) is a refurbishment project undertaken by the local practice of KC Design Studio. In this project, a small apartment with a number of dark rooms is transformed into a bright sophisticated urban home. Many drawbacks of the space were flipped to create design features such as an irregular shape, low ceilings and lack of natural light.
