Uchi Houston is a contemporary Japanese and Sushi restaurant, the second for award winning chef, Tyson Cole. It was opened in a renovated 1930s landmark structure in Montrose which in the past was known as the Felix Mexican restaurant. The extensive redesign project was carried out by the Austin based practice of Michael HSU Office of Architecture who incorporated several elements from the original Tyson Cole restaurant within the design.
The circular entrance of the iconic structure was lined with a puzzle screen of timber slats creating a warm welcoming atmosphere to the new space. The arched windows were dressed with cast concrete frames and custom bronze screens with matching light fittings were designed. The contemporary updates to the retro space continued with textured concrete walls and hand hewn furniture, cabinet and booths of local walnut and pecan. The result is a contemporary rural environment in a popular chic destination.
