To seamlessly merge new contemporary interiors with the older shell of an architecture classic, requires skill and a context-sensitive touch. Found within Mies van der Rohe’s iconic 860-880 Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, this apartment is a prime example of such an approach, overseen by Vladimir Radutny and Fanny Hothan of Vladimir Radutny Architects.

In 1973 Ricardo Bofill discovered a cement factory, an industrial complex from the turn of the century, comprising over thirty silos, underground galleries and huge engine rooms. The factory, abandoned and partially in ruins, was a compendium of industrial forms that could be interpreted as brutalist, romantic, surreal …

The designation by the National Park Service recognises the house's historical and architectural significance, joining a list of monuments deemed worthy of preservation. Completed in 1973, the home was commissioned by the Douglases after they contacted Meier to buy the blueprints for his earlier Smith House in Connecticut.
