Architecture firm extrastudio has transformed a former winery in portugal into a secluded two-storey home. the residence — photographed here by fernando guerra — is located in a small village south of lisbon, which, with its mediterranean climate and sheltered setting, created the ideal conditions for growing grapes and producing wine.

The house dates from the 1930s and went through many renovation during the years.When it was our turn to renew the the 200 square meter apartment our first step was to simplify everything we felt was too much, in terms of dimensions and materials. The task was to create a relaxed, soft environment and the main interior feature is a dark, low-lying base line that runs like a unifying horizon through the whole apartment.

Designing contemporary house extensions that complement an existing structure and also blend into a natural environment poses various challenges. But the Bergmeisterwolf architecture studio makes it seem effortless with this vacation home in Toscolano Maderno, on the West coast of Lake Garda.

Wedge-shaped chunks are carved out of the marble-clad volume of this house in Bangkok, Thailand, which was designed by local studio Openbox Architects.Openbox Architects chose white marble panels to clad the upper brick structure of the building, to gives the appearance of a solid volume.
