Alice & Fifth Nightclub, Sandton, Johannesburg – South Africa
Designer Tristan Plessis and his StudioA/Tristan Plessis Studio took client Milk & Honey Group SA’s straightforward brief and translated it into his own version of edgy decadence.
The dark colouring and the hard wood and marble are nicely softened by velvet seating and curved forms.
The surprises in this space are the curving, beveled white ‘paneling’ that covers some of the walls and even the ceiling in one area by the bar, and the striped marble flooring that makes the bar-front area stand out.
The latest nightlife hot spot in Johannesburg is Alice & Fifth. It advertises itself as an underground avant-garde venue and the address for luxury dining.
It is a darkly masculine night club in a rich, retro style we have seen much of lately with its velvet upholstery, dark wood, brass fittings, heavy drapery and no windows.

Luminaire opens first West Coast location in West Hollywood
Spanning 15,500 square feet (1,440 square metres), the showroom occupies part of a two-storey structure built in the 1960s. Glass walls offer clear views into the retail space, where white walls and concrete flooring offer a simple backdrop for furniture, lighting, floor coverings and other lifestyle products.
The space has an open and airy atmosphere. A portion of the upper floor plate is carved away, enabling sight lines between the two levels. Situated in the centre of the store is a black staircase that acts a sculptural element.
A two-storey building with glazed walls houses the new Los Angeles showroom for upscale modern furniture retailer Luminaire.
The showroom is located on Beverly Boulevard in West Hollywood. It marks the fourth location for Luminaire, which was founded in 1974 by Nasir and Nargis Kassamali. The company’s flagship showroom in Miami opened in 1984, and its Chicago location debuted in 1989. It has a second Miami location, called Luminaire Lab, that opened in 2002.
