Another project in the ongoing regeneration of the Eastern Harbor area of Amsterdam is Mercat, a design by local architects Concrete, for a Spanish restaurant which is the concept of the IQ Creative group of restaurants. Located in an old harbor authority building, the designers have retained the industrial chic character of the space with its vaulted ceilings and wonderful original circular windows.
The name Mercat means market in Spanish and the interior is inspired by the famous indoor markets in Spain such as the Mercat de la Boqueria in Barcelona. The exposed pipework and distressed walls set the tone for the new industrial style lamps which have been added to the space. The service and bar areas resemble actual market stalls complete with hanging produce and Spanish names for food in neon lighting hung from metal mesh.
A slightly smarter dining space on the upper level looks down over an open space with an eclectic selection of furnishings composed of vintage, wood and even leather Chesterfields. A terrace for outdoor dining is available, depending of course on the weather, offering a view of the old harbor in this area which is rapidly becoming a center for international dining and nightlife. This is the 9th establishment opened by the IQ Creative family in and around Amsterdam in the recent past.
