London based architects and interior designs, SHH are responsible for the redesigning and rebranding of the ground and first floor eateries at the Barbican Centre. They are now known as The Barbican Foodhall on the waterfront and The Barbican Lounge on the upper level. The concept was to create new spaces worthy the largest multi-arts centre in Europe.
The Barbican Foodhall is also a food market where deli-type products may be purchased and eaten at multiple seating tables or at counter tops. In addition, a take-away service is in line with the fast pace and lively informality of city life. The flooring has been replaced with Cradley brick paving, connecting it to the outdoor seating area which has been refurbished with custom made metal mesh umbrellas and an eclectic mix of reissued vintage and bespoke furniture. Lighting by PSLAB Beirut and planting by Kat Gould completes this area.
In the Lounge, on the first floor, the walls were stripped back to the original rough texture, mirroring the architectural style of the building. The concrete floor was finished by blue poured resin, a color that was copied from a picture of the lake at the Barbican, which was taken one summer. Furniture by SHH and Stefan Bench was added in striking colors and the lighting installation once again by PSLAB. A 14m black glass bar leads to the terrace area, linking the inside with the outside.
