The bar/restaurant Mazzo in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, has recently received a face-lift by the firm of Concrete Architectural Associates. Named after a notorious disco in Amsterdam, the logo Mazzo is integral in the decor of the establishment. Constructed of raw steel and filled with multi-coloured disco lights, it forms a feature instantly recognisable and visible to passers-by.
A long narrow building, typical of Amsterdam, containing different floor and ceiling levels, is welcoming in spite of the industrial materials used in its renovation. The entrance from Rozengracht leads into a bar area for drinks or coffee. Flexible seating areas for meals are to be found further along where the rooms widen. The kitchen is in the rear where a private dining area, complete with fireplace and TV can be found. The various aspects are brought together by a long solid pine cupboard along one wall used for both decorative and storage purposes.
The use of wood and steel in the renovation complement the existing materials of concrete, brickwork and stone and the addition of lighting by the Bestlight series by GUBI contributes to the warmth of the venue. Further emphasised by portraits of people of different ages which hang on the walls, this is an environment which all the family can enjoy.
