Ron Ulicny is an excellent craftsman and an accomplished artist, with a somewhat bizarre talent for taking the ordinary and creating the extraordinary. There is a positively vintage feel to his choice of materials and objects out of which his sculptures are created.
Based in Portland, USA, the artist can only own, what can only be described as the largest collection of everyday and not so everyday objects. His work he terms as ‘viscurrealistic fabrications’ - a creative term for his creations.
His Picasso-esque deconstructed guitar is a direct jab at abstract art, his complex combinations are unexpected juxtapositions of objects, a retro wooden scrabble set pours from a tap, heels on roller skates and a whimsical landscape contained within a cut-out section of a bowling bowl, to mention but a few. A gigantic dose of tongue in cheek humor and irony challenges our perceptions and forces us to rethink the possibility of the impossible.
