Every December in the tiny village of Jukkasjarvi in Northern Sweden, an art exhibition with a difference takes place. This one of a kind event (admittedly there are other ice events but not to this scale), is known as the ICEHOTEL but it is much more than just a temporary hotel.
This collective project, which is a culmination of the creative talent of a range of international artists, begins before the thaw sets in when tons of ice from the River Torne is collected and placed into storage for the next event.
The 2012 ICEHOTEL, the largest in the world, is created from 2.000 tons of river ice and 30.000 tons of slice, a strong compound of snow and ice. The 65 suites of the hotel are spaces which evoke deep emotions, spaces of melancholy and elation, contrasting elements of sorrow and joy. Tears, flowers, UFOs and fairytale palaces are all represented within this spectacular ephemeral structure, which returns to its source once more and becomes part of the River Torne, come Spring.
For the faint hearted or cold blooded, alternative accommodation is available adjoining the 5.500 sq.m. ice sculpture and the exhibition may be enjoyed on a guided tour followed by a warming shot of vodka served in an ice glass from the ice bar!
