An exhibition currently on show at the Budweis House of Art in the Czech Republic is Ku u so u by Japanese architect Takeshi Hosaka. The title means ‘imagination’ in Japanese and refers to the initial thoughts of a design concept, which doesn’t necessarily reach fruition.
This talented young artist is in the habit of using pen and paper to record his primary thoughts before deciding how to proceed with a particular architectural concept. It is common for up to 99% of these sketches to be discarded and only 1% becomes a reality. It is this 99% which has been incorporated into the exhibition which reference his fantasy, his agile imagination and thought processes, no matter how impractical or unacceptable they may be within a project. He wants to expose the public to this experience of limbo, a space between the mind and the tactile reality and that is why his sketches are suspended from the ceiling as clouds for visitors to walk through. Alternatively, his inspirational ‘Moon Chair’ is on hand and guests can lie back and watch the world go by while observing his sketches as though they are ‘floating’ in space.
In addition, a selection of his most successful projects are on display, including ‘House in Byobugaura’ in Kanagawa and ‘Room Room House’ in Tokyo. This fascinating peek into the mind of this innovative young architect through the exhibition Ku u so u will run through May 3rd and was sponsored by Sika, a Japanese firm of construction products.
