Cologne based artist, Simon Schubert needs no utensils to create his architecturally inspired works of art. He produces these amazingly intricate designs simply by folding and refolding a sheet of paper numerous times until he attains the desired result.
This series represents interiors of actual structures as well as imagined ones. In particular, a 350 year old palace that had previously stood in Berlin, the Stadtschloss, which was demolished by the East Germans during the separation of Germany.
The finished product of his pieces demonstrates an interplay of shade and light, depending on the position of the paper, giving an impression of a combination of 2D and 3D work. He began the art of paper creasing in 2003 and since that time, he has perfected his skill to an unbelievable degree. He is inspired by a range of subjects from literature to films and fine art to philosophy.
