The newly inaugurated Shanghai Film Museum is a long awaited project which highlights Chinese film industry both past and present. Designed by Tilman Thurmer, founder of the practice of Coordination Asia and the Art Director of the museum, the vast space which covers four storeys of a former film studio in the Xujiahui area of Shanghai, is the film buffs’ wonderland of memorabilia and so much more.
With a rich palette of resources relating to the Chinese film industry, there is ample space to display a wide variety of stills, props, cameras from the past and hi-tech methods of the present which have all been incorporated in the immersive destination. The visitor can become part of the world of animation, production, sound and live broadcasting, learn all the backstage happenings and share in the secrets of this glamorous world.
Over 70 interactive installations with thousands of exhibits and a virtual red carpet composed of a passage of brilliant red lights are to be enjoyed by visitors. The role of Thurner goes way beyond that of a designer within the project as he is entirely hands on with the day to day running and development of the museum where he endeavors to inspire the younger generation to contribute to the future of the Chinese film industry.
