This converted warehouse space was remodelled by San Francisco based practice LINEOFFICE Architecture. The weightiness of the post and beam structure and the tactile grain of the Douglas Fir were at once seductive for both the client and the architect. With such an exquisitely crafted timber structure, LINEOFFICE were keen to honour the original bones of the space.
Conceptually, the minimal additions lightly occupy the space almost as loose pieces of furniture, as if the space could easily return to its original state. Low joinery and walls slot between the geometry of the existing framework, allowing the existing ceiling to fly above, completely uninterrupted. As a result, this single bedroom loft is an open and airy space with free flowing connections between sleeping, living and food preparation. Only the bathroom can be closed off with a door.
The loft may be minimal, but the space is not devoid of personality. It exudes an air of assertiveness. The unapologetic use of timber, the sharp moments of oiled black steel, the heavy, chunky proportions and the generous spaciousness reflect something about the person living inside
