The Reddress is designed by Aamu Song and produced by The Finnish Institute in London, featuring an installation and performance space in the form of a vast, red dress. This London Design Festival Reddress hosted a series of evening concerts and daytime events at the famous East London’s boxing venue, York Hall.
Aiming to question the roles we play as a participant or performer, up to 238 spectators are able to immerse themselves and wrap up inside the colossal gown, created from over 550 metres of Danish Textile company, Kvadrat’s classic Divinia Wool fabric. A performer then climbs up a concealed staircase inside and puts on the dress, whilst visitors can fully engage themselves with the space and moment.
Korean born Aamu Song met her partner Johan Olin while studying at University of Art and Design in Helsinki, and they went on to found COMPANY together in 2000. Despite lacking any traditional training as fashion designers, they both have a real passion for clothes and have created a number of unusual products including ‘Dance Shoes’, shoes physically connecting adult and child. COMPANY won the 2010 State Prize for Design in Finland.
