Rain Room is an interactive installation at The Curve gallery in London’s Barbican Center. Developed by the young experimental collective, rAndom International. Rain Room is a 100 sqm. plinth on which visitors are invited to enter an artificially induced rain shower.
The highly refined technology behind the installation incorporates a series of cameras which 3D-map the location of bodies on the plinth and direct the water away from them. Of course, no system is infallible and sudden movements could override the sensitive sensors, resulting in an unexpected splash of water.
The founders of the collective, Hannes Koch, Florian Ortkrass and Stuart Wood, state that without audience participation, the work would lose all meaning. The reaction of the public to this surreal experience is recorded which then becomes a vital part of the whole piece.
The event has proved to be a popular attraction and as only 10 people at a time may enter the Rain Room, visitors must take into account that there will be an estimated 90 minutes wait in order take part in this once in a lifetime experience!
