The Hotel Au Vieux Panier in Marseille is well known as a patron of the arts and the individuality of its six rooms. On a regular basis, artists are invited to decorate the rooms in their signature style creating a unique identity for the hotel. The most recent project is that of Tilt, a long standing graffiti artist who has published several books on various aspects of his art. He preferred a concept of an installation for his design, inspired by a similar piece he had created in an old hotel in Paris the previous year.
In order to complete his work within a period of just one week, he enlisted the assistance of graffiti artist Tober, photographer and media artist Grizz and Don Cho, a local hip-hop singer to participate in the project.
The room was divided into two equal parts, one of which was left white and the other treated as a blank canvas which was covered with a mass of vibrant colors in the identifiable style of Tilt. Every aspect of the room and furnishings, bedding, mirrors and curtains were adorned in the same way. The work consists mainly of bubble tags and curving shapes which refer to the artist’s obsession with the female form. An overkill on tags, drips and throw ups rather than pretty designs create the idea of chaos, made more apparent by the stark whiteness of the other half of the room!
