The Cypriot born, London based designer, Anastassiades, is well known for his collection of sculptural lighting, which he creates for a range of high end brands such as Flos. He has now branched out into the world of furniture design and has recently unveiled his first collection of stools, which are displayed alongside his mobile style pendant lights at the Herman Miller showroom in Milan.
Created in a number of heights, the stools can be used as side tables or seating at dining tables, bars or counters. Made from Walnut or American Oak, materials which have an inherent ageing factor, the stools have a circular seat on a single pedestal with a brass cross-bar or foot rest. The design reflects the timeless quality which is seen in the existing classic range of pieces created for Herman Miller by iconic names such as Charles and Ray Eames.
The installation, which is housed in a grey room in front of the Herman Miller space, is entitled 'The Double Dream of Spring' , a reference to the 1915 painting by 20th Century Italian Metaphysical artist, Giorgio de Chirico. It consists of three oversized brass editions of the Mobile Chandelier, presented at the 2015 Milan lighting fair, above the collection of Anastassiades stools of varying heights.
The designer launched his own London based lighting brand in 2007 after studying Industrial design at the Royal College of Arts. He designed his first furniture piece, a two seater sofa, last year, which was launched by the London design brand, SCP, to mark its 30th Anniversary. This range of stools for Herman Miller, marks his first venture into the world of mass produced furniture.
