In an attempt to transform Singapore into a tourist destination rather than a stopover, a series of development projects have been carried out in recent years, the latest of which is the Gardens by the Bay.
Landscape architects, Grant Associates are responsible for the design of this massive project which covers an area of 101 hectares of reclaimed land close to the famed Singapore Marina. A combination of organic and technology has contributed to this impressive project of regeneration.
Two giant bio-domes contain a wide range of Mediterranean and tropical plants, trees and flowers, many of which are endangered species. The ecological aspect of the park is adhered to by the creation of 18 supertrees. As well as providing illumination for the park through their photovoltaic panels, their sustainable energy systems contribute to the cooling systems of the conservatories. These artificial trees also collect rainwater and provide shade and one of them even has a bistro on top.
Visitors are guided around the gardens via a 22 meter high walkway and have the opportunity of a bird’s eye view of the impressive complex which also contains several cafes and restaurants as well as facilities for hosting special events such as sound and light shows. The project has already proved to be popular as in the first three months of operation more than one million visitors have passed through its gates.
