Constructed from steel and anchored to raw concrete blocks, the series of sculptures by Johannesburg based artist Regardt van der Meulen are inspired by the strength and weakness of the human body.
His sculptural works are frequently created from the industrial materials of steel and concrete and this series follows on from his previous work, a pair of female dancers named ‘Aglaia’ and ‘Thalia’ created from steel and exhibiting a wealth of movement. This current series of abstract interpretations of male figures, standing motionless, their bodies incomplete appearing robotic and threatening, yet at the same time vulnerable.
The artist’s research into human nature and emotional reactions to the hidden dangers of modern day society, made bearable by the manufactured illusion of safety, is an intrinsic driving force in his work.
