Dan Tobin Smith is an established photographer with a portfolio ranging from still life to commissions from international clients. His recent ongoing project, Alphabetical, is an experimental series of letters of the alphabet in their most recognizable shapes of Helvetica, created from random materials, found objects, flowers, broken glass and feathers, just to mention a few. The project originated from a commission from Creative Review to produce the letter A for their Annual.
The artist claims that his current work makes use of ‘anamorphosis, a distorted projection to create the forms.’ One could refer to it as a contemporary take on the Trompe l’oeil technique, one of its first uses in photography in a 1913 piece entitled ‘The Human US Shield’ which shows a huge US shield composed of 30.000 servicemen and officers from Camp Cluster.
The series of photographs of his project are simply stunning, a selection of still life compilations in various stages of completion, a project which merges the perceptions of 2D and 3D objects, observed from the optimum angle and preserved in time through the lens of this talented artist and photographer.
