Located in Taiwan, Residence C ( Yonghe Chen House) is a refurbishment project undertaken by the local practice of KC Design Studio. In this project, a small apartment with a number of dark rooms is transformed into a bright sophisticated urban home. Many drawbacks of the space were flipped to create design features such as an irregular shape, low ceilings and lack of natural light.
The rooms have been converted into two main areas, public and private with the latter placed
between the open plan living area with sliding glass doors to take advantage of any available
daylight. Once the doors are open the entire apartment is a bright L shaped space.
The eyes are drawn to the contoured ceiling which creates an optical illusion and gives needed height where it is lacking. A simple colour palette of grey and white further enhances the feeling of space, and contemporary polished concrete floors set the stage for a variety of materials, textures and trims.
Each area effortlessly flows into the other, no space is wasted. Ultimately, a once dark
uninteresting abode has been transformed into a smart contemporary home.
