Formerly a logging town, Truckee, near Lake Tahoe in California, has now been developed into a popular mountain retreat. This is the location for a project undertaken by the local practice, Faulkner Architects, entitled Lookout. The specification is for a spacious family property to be enjoyed throughout the year.
As the site is on a steep slope, surrounded by trees, great care was given to the sustainability of the design and as such it follows the natural rhythm of its immediate environment. The rugged yet contemporary design references the beauty of the surrounding mountainous landscape.
Composed of three adjoining geometric shapes, from certain angles it looks no larger than a
simple cabin. The individual spaces accommodate the family home, guest house and a common area. Constructed to follow a nearby ski run, a unique feature has been created to allow the skier to enter the property directly via a cut out space into the living area.
