Harris Tweed is a fabric which has its origins on a small island community off the Highlands of Scotland. Hand woven on looms in the cottages of shepherds, it has retained its old world charm and is the antithesis of 21st century production methods. In 2010, the viability of this iconic fabric was threatened. It now appears that a new lease on life has been offered by collaboration with Nike to incorporate the product into their designs .A limited edition Nike Air Royalty Harris Tweed is available for 75 pounds and includes Tweed rope laces adding to the concept and originality of the product.
The BBC4 series “Tweed” emphasizes the nostalgia evoked by the mention of the fabric and the series follows its production from the gathering of virgin wool through to its incorporation into the Nike shoes.
