It is not often that an everyday object becomes a design classic but in the case of Big Ben, created by Dutch designer, Marcel Wanders, this could actually become a reality. The huge wall clock, inspired by the well known London landmark of the same name, is part of the 2012 Moooi collection.
The designer feels that the time has come to treat the clock not simply as a timepiece, as the time is easily available via our mobile phones, computer screens and watches. The humble object is being recreated as a decorative item which could grace the wall of the most discerning client. Big Ben is constructed of fibreglass, making it relatively lightweight in spite of its size, the black hands are of powder coated aluminium. The embossed pattern of the white dial is of an elegant baroque nature, adding a classic touch to an otherwise contemporary design.
