Following from the ‘Wrinkles of the City’ projects in Spain, Shanghai and Los Angeles, French street artist JR and Miami based artist Jose Parla chose Havana, Cuba in which to stage their event.during the Havana Biennale earlier this year. The huge portraits portray some of the most celebrated elderly residents of the city, all of whom have lived through the revolution and have experienced the ensuing changes in the urban landscape of the city. The sides of buildings and walls have been used as a canvas for the work and the wrinkles of the weathered faces compete with the ravaged surfaces of the structures.
In February of 2013, a 160 page hardback book will be released depicting the portraits and analysing the work of the artists. The lives of the subjects are shared and honoured within the project which looks at the devastation of a society forced into a regime and subsequently emerging against all odds with an amazing amount of energy and love of life. The book will be available in English and Spanish.
