An industrial elevator appears to be bursting through the floor of Liverpool, UK, catching by surprise anyone passing by. This mixed media installation created by Israeli artist Oded Hirsch, was commissioned by Liverpool Biennial, as part of the city’s 2012 Biennial celebrations.
A literal breakthrough, “The Lift” is a physical sculpture emerging from the underworld and is the artist’s first installation taking place outside of a gallery scenery. The main objective of Hirsch was to underline the disruption of space and how human beings perceive their surroundings. Successfully he manages to achieve this, through the context in which his creation appears and the impact it has on the behavior of anyone passing by.
An unexpected artistic nudge that points out to the possibility of an unknown, subterranean place and urge us to reconsider how we operate within our perceived surroundings.
