A fun collection of portraits depicting many of the international stars of architecture, past and present, is the subject of Archipix by Barcelona based Italian graphic artist, Federico Babina. Each figure is portrayed in the pixillated retro style of the 8-bit video games of the 80’s together with a backdrop of a piece of architecture which the artist has chosen to represent each architect’s signature style.
By using the mouse in place of a paintbrush, a form of ‘digital pointillism’ creates a simple image which glorifies both the architect and the simple pixel. The artist feels that in the basic, and somewhat primitive method by today’s levels of digital graphics, form of pixels, the ‘very essence’ of each architect and their buildings are seen in their purest form. So, it appears that the tables have been turned on the ground breaking architects of the 20th and 21st centuries, when iconic names from Le Corbusier and Zaha Hadid have become the creations rather than the creators!
