The construction of the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion is an annual event, now in its 12th year. The coveted commission is traditionally awarded to eminent contemporary artists and architects. This year, the Swiss architects, Herzog + De Meuron and Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei have been chosen to collaborate on the 2012 project.
The structure, which is part of the 2012 Festival of the culmination of the Olympiad, is a homage to the pavilions of the past. The ground was excavated to expose the foundations of previous years, these in turn were preserved and added to before being veneered with cork. The result is a multisensory installation which invites visitors to explore its landscaped seating areas and exhibition space. The circular roof is supported by 12 columns, representing the 12 years of the tradition of the Summer Pavilion, and contains a shallow pool of rainwater.
The Serpentine Gallery Pavilion will be open to the public from June to October, 2012.
