An abandoned quarry in the mountains around Shanghai has recently been transformed into an unusual botanical garden, thanks to a 6 year restoration project by THUPDI and Tsinghua University. The American Society of Landscaping bestowed the 2012 Honor Award for the innovative design of the site which had suffered the ravages of industry for decades and from it created a place of beauty.
A walkway encircles the water pit of the quarry from which the scars of the past may be observed together with a carefully planned display of native plants and trees. The walkway was originally a transportation ramp for the rocks harvested from the site. A place of quiet and reflection, this new park with a difference is rapidly becoming a popular tourist destination and a respite for the locals from the hustle and bustle of the busy city of Shanghai.
