Designed by Pottgiesser Architecture Possibles, the Paris based firm, is the recently completed ‘Maison L’. The concept of this project was inspired by an orangery, a greenhouse type building, all that remained on the site on which originally was built an 18th century castle. Located just a short drive from Paris, the structure is a residence for a family of six.
Following the natural inclination of the site, the main living area is built 2 meters underground with skylights at intervals, permitting daylight to enter and ensuring natural ventilation and cooling systems. Greenery has been planted on the concrete roof suggesting an indoor – outdoor aspect to the building. The sleeping quarters are housed in a series of 5 three storey towers, extending from the roof. Each one contains a bedroom, bathroom and dressing room, the master bedroom being in the largest of the five.
Great care has been taken by the designers not to impose on the landscape. The various structures have been connected by a curving stone wall.
