Andrew Maynard Architects, have designed a great family home, integrated with an existing structure built in the 90s located on the site. Located in Melbourne, Australia, this structure had to consider various obstacles, the sun being one.
The aim of course was to take full advantage of the sun by being able to regulate its use according to season and need. As the site faced north, the existing backyard was hidden from sun all year long, so the decision was made to create a new structure that faced the sun, using a flexible facade that allowed the control of sunlight within the house throughout the year.
Originally the two floors were to be connected externally with stairs, however the idea of a slope seemed more inviting and in conclusion, the Hill House was created. Most importantly however, is the fact that two very simple principles are enough to guide you into creating something simple but also fascinating and innovative. Andrew Maynard Architects seem to know how to bring experimentation and realisation very close, creating great modern architecture whilst having fun doing so.
