Designed by world leading architect, Zaha Hadid, the Eli & Edythe Broad Art Museum on the campus of Michigan State University is now a reality. It began as
the dream of philanthropist Eli Broad who generously donated $26 million to this university to this end and then came up with another $10 million to ensure
that this project would be undertaken by the legendary Ms Hadid.
A striking example of contemporary architecture constructed of concrete, glass and a stainless steel pleated facade which makes an intense statement of
contrast beside the conventional brick buildings that make up the campus. The project covers an area of 4.200 m2 over three levels in addition to a sculpture
garden. As well as the double height lower level which houses an exhibition space for all genres of modern art, a cafe and shop, the museum also serves as an education resource on the campus and holds an important role as a cultural centre for the State of Michigan.
This is the first campus based project for Zaha Hadid and an example of the creative genius of a woman who continues to impress with her ability to design a structure which embraces a bold aesthetic within the bounds of functionality.
