The Oscar Niemeyer foundation is to be housed in the renovated family home of the architect in Canoas, Barra de Tijuca on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. The original house, built in the 50’s, was hailed as one of the finest examples of modern architecture of the time. Not surprisingly, Oscar Niemeyer, now in the 70th year of his distinguished career, is said to have defined modern architecture in Brazil.
The dual purpose structure, built on two levels, follows the lines of the undulating hills of Rio. The sensuous curves of the walls typify the architect’s love of natural shapes and the female form, mirrored in the voluptuous sculptures by the pool. The floor to ceiling windows of the façade offer a spectacular sea view and the lushness and the beauty of the gardens within the grounds become part of the interior. The furnishings, designed by the architect and his daughter Anna Maria, follow the aesthetics of the building with warmth and comfort. The exceptions to the design concept are the bedrooms which are intended to be a sanctuary from the outside world. This has been achieved by the small windows with restricted views, thus creating a private world within a public one.
The critics have never been slow to appreciate and praise the innovative architectural designs of Niemeyer and the raw extraordinary beauty of his work which represents the multiplicity of the Brazilian culture.
