The design project undertaken by APK Architects for the Campus of AMC College in Maroussi, created a more contemporary identity in the visual unification of the main structure with the extension. In addition, the architects redesigned the interior as well as landscaping the area surrounding the campus.
The bonding of the two volumes was achieved by the creation of an outer ‘skin’ which worked as a filter between the interior and the exterior of the campus. On the extension, a system of wooden louvred shutters was fitted as a shell which cut through the openings. In the case of the main building, a similar type of graded shutters were placed over the windows thus providing shade to the interior without obstructing the view of the greenery planted around the playing fields. A pebbled pathway interspersed with strips of white marble introduce a decorative yet practical element to indicate the natural route around the campus.
The use of wood on the lowered ceilings of the corridors creates a sense of continuity in the interior which is enhanced by the strategic positioning of concealed and strip lighting. The choice of mauve throughout the interior makes a striking contrast with the subtle grey of the exterior walls. The choice of wood as the main material used within the project reflects the harmonic inclusion of the campus into its natural environment.
