We are all aware that Italian luxury brand Salvatore Ferragamo is not all about shoes, even though that’s how it all began in the ‘Roaring 20s!’ Having said that, they are still famed for their beautifully handcrafted shoe collection with a difference, longevity and comfort! Since Massimiliano Giornetti joined the firm to take over the creative side, we have seen an increase in the experimental side of fashion design, testified by his somewhat edgy pieces shown in the Spring 2014 RTW collection, presented during the recent Milan Fashion Week.
A collection of contrasts with a masculine influence seen in the loose fitting, deconstructed pinstripe suits in pale feminine hues, cropped skinny pants and wide legged culottes, sharp tailoring with cheekily bared midriffs. Military parkas in transparent fabric, cute bra tops worn with anything and everything! A unique cross between a skirt and a kilt, layered, pleated and buckled, in fact it was buckles galore on too many pieces to count! For evening a metallic halter dress stood out as did a stunning satin number with the draped kilt themed skirt. The most striking pieces were the trench coats, in particular the reptile painted grey and purple and glossy black belted model which stood out with its timeless elegance!
Hemlines were long and short, colours pastels and neutrals, from off white through to sand, with the exception of a splash of green and a series of beautiful midnight blue, fabrics silk and satin, wonderfully soft, supple leather and reptilian. Shoes were built up, open toed sandals and knee high, rear laced gladiator boots. It’s hard to fault this brand, they always have all the bases covered in terms of creative designs, colours, fabrics and execution as we once again see in the Spring 2014 RTW collection.
