Global awareness of the talent of young Taiwanese designer, Jason Wu, came to light when Michelle Obama chose his stunning one shouldered white evening gown for her husband’s inauguration as President of the USA. His fame was sealed when Mrs. Obama chose yet another of his designs, the bright red creation, to wear at the President’s inauguration for his second term in office.
Since then, Wu has gone from strength to strength and in his recent New York Fashion Week runway show to present his Spring 2014 RTW Collection, we note an amazing level of maturity which belies his age. A glamorous palette of pale and interesting hues interjected with black and dark blue dominate the show. Transparencies abound in lingerie inspired garments, simple slips and corset tops, halters in modest lengths in silks, tulle and lace and heavily beaded fabrics. Unrestricted feminine lines of which the designer states, ’I want to let the body speak for itself, let the fabric do the magic’.
Bias cut dresses, low slouchy pants worn with oversized silky knit sweaters, frills and flounces. Glittery evening shorts and casual shorts worn with transparent safari jackets, the strategically positioned pockets protecting the model’s modesty. Contrasts in a heavy leather biker jacket worn with an slinky evening skirt. The show stoppers, stunning full length evening gowns with simple bodices culminating in flowing mermaid trains of ‘red carpet’ status. Bags in all shapes and sizes, small clutches through to chunky weekend proportions complete this elegant, urban collection.
