Alexander Wang’s collection for Spring Summer 2014 was provocative, fun and witty and seemed more like a branding exercise for the designer. Wang was clearly highly influenced by his teenage years in the 90’s when the designers were all about logo-mania. Wang explained that the reason for the logos on his Spring clothes was the nostalgia he feels for a time when “fashion was really fun, when there was wit and humour, and it wasn’t so serious.” The Explicit Content tees were another nod to that time.
Alexander Wang embedded his logo in bold block letters into laser cut-outs in leather, guipure lace, jacquards and at one point there was even a pair of white leather gloves coming down the runaway with WANG block letters sticking out of it. He successfully made his point clear and he definitely made sure to avoid any future confusion between his brand and his role at Balenciaga. Regarding the clothes he once again proved to be the king of downtown coolness showing cheeky button-downs unbuttoned up-to-there over Bermuda-boxing shorts, oversized utility jackets and leggy baby-doll spaghetti-strap dresses. We salute his attempt to reconnect with the street as genius.
