The wonder boy from Australia, 26-year-old Dion Lee better known for mixing technology with handcraft in his designs, competed for the International Woolmark Prize during London Fashion week in February 2013 by presenting a wool collection for the occasion.
Dion Lee’s collection for Woolmark was full of sculptural creations and architectural aesthetic. Having to prove the versatility of Merino wool through contemporary designs and novel techniques, the designer draw inspiration from Danish architect Jorn Utzon – the man behind Sydney’s Opera House – as well as Max Dupain’s stunning photographs of building constructions and Australia’s iconic Akubra hat.
Lee competed for the International Woolmark Prize against some of the most promising new names from around the globe like Sophie Theallet (USA), DRESSEDUNDRESSED (Japan) and designer Christian Wijnants, based in Antwerp and winner of the grand prize.
The judging panel included Natalie Massenet founder of net-a-porter.com and chairman of the British Fashion Council, Franca Sozzani Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Italia, L’Uomo Vogue Italia and vogue.it, Carla Sozzani creator of 10 Corso Como in Milan, Tim Blanks Editor-at-Large of style.com as well as designers Diane von Furstenberg, Victoria Beckham and Donatella Versace among others.
