When Danish design studio, Space was commissioned to redesign the interior of NOMA in Copenhagen, the number one restaurant in the world for the third time running, according to the San Pellegrino list, they had just three weeks in which to complete the project. During this period, the celebrated culinary team from NOMA was occupied in a pop-up at Claridges in celebration of the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The owner of NOMA, Rene Redzepi, requested that the design remain part of the whole dining experience and not separate from it in any way. The main intervention in the space was the construction of a brick wall in the lounge area and the new oak floor by Danish company, Dinesen. The tables and chairs remained the same design but new colors, textures and fabrics were introduced. The Nordic culture in its most basic form is represented by the contrasting elements of leathers, animal skins, stone and timber which create an almost Medieval ambiance within a contemporary design.
The unpretentious interior design is ‘a balance between ‘the rough, defined detail and elegance’ which perfectly reflects the philosophy of the creative cuisine for which this fine dining destination is renowned.
