Japanese design firm Nendo is responsible for the design of this pristine tree house in a forest in Komoro City, a mountainous region in Japan. The project was undertaken for the Momofuku Ando Centre, an organization whose aim is to bring people closer to nature in order to promote a healthy interaction between humans and ecosystems.

This delightful design, which accommodates one person and 78 nesting spaces for local species of birds, resembles a giant version of the classic birdhouse found in gardens everywhere. A series of mini houses on the facade have entrance holes to access the nests and on the rear side, a large hole for the human. A ladder leads up the tree to the house where, once inside a person may observe the nesting habits of the birds through a series of peepholes.

Nendo believes that the avian homes are equally as important as human homes and that this is a step closer to the co-existence and greater understanding of the various species who share a common space in our world.
