An exploratory concept on the extensive use of concrete within design directed the practice of Studio Eight Twentythree to employ this as the primary material in a project for a permanent exhibition space and gallery, in which to house and launch the latest collection of fabrics for a Mumbai based firm of designers and manufacturers.

Concrete has been used on all the surfaces in a variety of forms from 2’ x 2’ tiles on one wall to polished concrete in a random number of mixes and textures on another. The floors are polished concrete and 8x8 tiles with black basalt stone by the wall where the sumptuous fabrics are displayed, creating a notable contrast which brings the attention to their exotic hues.

Random groupings of vintage seats upholstered in the luxuriant fabrics stand beside weathered resourced objects, chosen from the personal collection of the clients, and contribute to the sparse furnishings of the space. Richly upholstered sofas are positioned beside the limited windows in the gallery, which is low lit with a carefully monitored program of illumination, highlighting the fabrics and other points of interest within the shadowy gallery.

By using materials in their primitive form, together with dramatic lighting, an aura of mystery has been created within the largely unadorned space, allowing the materials to speak for themselves and providing a spectacular backdrop for the rich fabrics which claim the starring role in the space.
