The renovation of the Taastrup Theatre in Taastrup, Denmark and the 250sqm extension of the same was a project undertaken by COBE architects with cooperation from COWI A/S. The clients, Taastrup Municipality, initially wished to improve the energy efficiency of the original theatre, which dates from the 1970s, and also integrate it within the community, a social housing area.

The extension was built by enclosing the concrete built theatre in a surround of acrylic prisms. A new foyer, arrival area and cafe were designed within in the extension, connected to the main building by a series of gates.  The semi-transparent prisms allow the internal functions of the theatre to be visible on the outside thus involving the theatre with the neighbourhood. The appearance of the facade changes throughout the day and night according to the light and shade, creating a feature of interest to the area.

The interior of the existing building was redecorated using a combination of classical features of gilt and crystal which soften the appearance of the harsh concrete, and fluorescent lamps and chairs by Paustian, creating an impressive and unique ambience. Restroom and non technical functions were moved from the basement to the ground floor and the administration of the theatre was improved by creating a single work space, thus increasing efficiency and reducing costs and freeing more space for theatrical use.
