‘Necessity is the mother of invention’ is a saying which certainly applies in the case of the origin of the Living Cube. When German born, Bern based young designer Till Koenneker of the practice of illDesigns moved into a small apartment, he was confronted with a dire lack of space which he addressed through the creation of this ingenious multi-functional item of furniture.
The Living Cube has the possibility of being many things to many people, in the case of the designer it is used as a place to hang his coat, store his shoes, record collection and entertainment center complete with TV. A side door opens to reveal a roomy walk in closet or storeroom, usually an unknown entity in a small apartment. A side ladder leads up to further lounging area and a comfortable guest space.
Every inch of this compact unit has been utilized in a highly intelligent manner, totally adaptable to suit a variety of purposes to be accommodated easily into most spaces. Primarily it could prove to be an invaluable piece of furniture in a cramped urban apartment for a young worker or student.
