Controversy surrounds the latest design project of Danish architect Bjark Ingels of BIG (Bjarke Ingles Group). The innovative design of a residential pyramid tower block for clients, Durst Fetner Residential, is yet to receive approval. Containing elements of Ingel’s signature mountain theme, this structure, a fusion of European and New York design facets, is quite unexpected in W57th St., an industrial waterfront location, currently undergoing a revitalization program.

The authorities are concerned that the building should be able to provide affordable housing for New York residents, however, the developers have not agreed to this. In addition, as to whether the interior courtyard green space will be exclusively for the use of residents or for the general public has also not been ascertained.

The base of the building is intended for commercial and cultural usage. The architect has suggested that the International Center for Photography should be housed there with the remained spaces occupied by retail outlets, this is also awaiting approval.
