A formerly Victorian double front house, located in Melbourne, Australia, was in desperate need of a transformation and as a result, Matt Gibson Architects came up with a solution that respects the past and welcomes the future. They created a contemporary and functional residence, of an imposing character, and found a way to make the old and the new features harmoniously coexist.

The main front elements were left intact, while a timber cladding was added on the facade, giving it a warm yet unusual modern look. A garage, a pool and an upper level were constructed and particular emphasis was placed on developing sculptural spaces that contrast the remaining Victorian residence. The two levels of a new ‘L’ shaped floor area were positioned on top of each other at the rear, this way exploiting the restrictions of the site. The architects chose to deliberately set apart the new work, but found a way to graciously integrate it into the existing structure. They created a large hallway, acting as a main axis connecting the old part with the new, preserving the memory of the original Victorian residence.

The natural color palate combined with the abundant use of timber give away the feeling of an urban oasis, with an unusual exotic touch.
