As part of the programmed revitalization project in Eindhoven, the Nederlands, Italian architects Massimiliano Fuksas have designed "de blob". Located on September 18 square in the historic heart of the city, this 3000 m2 multi-purpose construction is the centerpiece of this undertaking.
The Blob (Binary Linear Object) is a 5 storey concrete structure built to serve as the entrance to the Admirant – a major commercial urban project in downtown Eindhoven. It is encased in an organically shaped cover made of triangular shaped glass panes and steel. An underground parking area for 1.700 bicycles has been incorporated into the design, freeing the upper pedestrian area from the clutter of parked cycles and creating a natural meeting place for the residents and visitors to the city. Glass covered walkways link the street with the underground area. The paved pedestrian precinct is inset with glass shapes, reflecting the lights from within the subterranean area.
