Architects Bonnard Woeffray, with the collaboration of Nuno Ferreira, recently completed the extension to the Bovenier School in Switzerland. The project was commissioned by the Commune de Bovernier in 2008. The result is an impressive structure, covering an area of 1.630 sq.m., connected to the main building by a covered walkway above the school playground.

The enlargement of the school is in perfect synchrony both with the existing buildings and with the environment. As the school is built at the bottom of an incline, it was of particular importance that resistance against an avalanche had to be a priority. This was carried out by the use of angular concrete walls and spaces capable of distancing snow from the occupied areas thus ensuring the safety of its occupants. The external walls have been covered with metallic and mirrored surfaces, reflecting the alpine location and creating an illusion of continuity. All aspects of school and community life have been catered for within the building from physical education to extracurricular activities. All in all this is a valuable addition to the community.
